  1. Sports Hypnosis Techniques - Mental Rehearsal

    Many top athletes use various mental training techniques to achieve peak performance. It is well documented that imagery or visualization improves sports performance. Mental Rehearsal is a technique where an athlete vividly imagines or thinks about themselves successfully achieving their goal while competing in their sport.

    Mental rehearsal steps:

    1. Determine your goal
    Before you begin, write down your goal. Specifically, how you would like to play or perform in your chosen sport. What obstacles will you have to overcome in order to reach your goal?

    2. Center yourself
    With your eyes closed, take a moment to center yourself by taking a few deep breaths while becoming aware of your breathing. Then become aware of the space around you, what sounds do you hear? What sensations you feel?

    3. Start your visualization
    Think about yourself successfully practicing your specific goal. This is where you will begin your mental movie (always practicing at the same speed and intensity as you play in your game or competition).

    4. Create your success image
    Now create a success image of you achieving peak performance while playing or competing in your sport. (A perfect golf swing or dismount, scoring a basket, goal, or touchdown, or having more mental toughness, confidence, or intensity).

    5. Bring in all your senses
    Enhance your mental movie by bringing in all your senses. (Where are you? What are you doing? What sounds do you hear? What emotions are you feeling? What do you smell and taste?).

    6. Positive self talk
    While you are experiencing your success image, give yourself positive affirmations throughout your mind movie. (I am a confident, poised, and determined basketball player).

    7. Reward image
    Complete your imagery by creating a reward image that represents you winning and enjoying your reward. Include celebrating your success with your team, coaches, family, and friends.

    Repeat your five minute mental rehearsal at least two times each day. Rehearse yourself overcoming all obstacles, setbacks, and distractions, so you are playing or performing exactly the way you want. You may visualize yourself as if you were watching yourself on a movie screen, or as if you are watching from the perspective of looking out of your own eyes.

    After reading an article about Dave Elman, I was prompted to read his book again. Actually, it is a book that you can keep on reading and still find another perspective on the art of hypnosis. If you have never read this before get it. If you already own it, then dust it off from your collection and read it again!

    If you are not sure who Dave Elman is, I am tempted to say where have you been? Well, he definitely is one of the fathers of modern day hypnosis as we see it today. The book was originally published back in 1964 as "Findings in Hypnosis" and now renamed "Hypnotherapy".

    Whilst you are reading "Hypnotherapy", you may find Dave Elman's work appears to be outdated, that is only in appearance. Beyond this, you will find another perspective for both novice and experienced hypnotists or hypnotherapists alike. Dare I say it may challenge some of the very beliefs you hold about hypnosis.
    I would definitely recommend Dave Elman's Hypnotherapy.

  3. 8 More Myths About Hypnosis

    Unfortunately, common myths and misunderstandings still exist about hypnosis. This article will help address and clear up some of these misconceptions to give a clearer understanding of what the process of hypnosis is and is not. Here are the 8 myths about hypnosis.

    Myth #1 - Hypnosis Can Make You Do Things Against Your Will

    In stage hypnosis shows, it may look like people are made to do things against their will, but this is really not the case at all. Participants in these shows are willing volunteers. In the hands of a professional stage hypnotist, participating in one of these shows can be interesting and fun. The same is true for professional hypnosis sessions for personal change. Because hypnosis is not mind control, you will never do anything against your will. Instead, in hypnosis you are moving toward your goal with the guidance of the hypnotist. And keep this in mind: all hypnosis is actually self-hypnosis.


    Myth #2 - Hypnosis Does Not Exist; It is Not Real


    This myth says there is no such thing as hypnosis, and people in hypnosis were "play-acting", in spite of powerful positive results many people were getting from the purposeful use of the trance state. In the last few years, scientists have carried out PET and MRI brain scans of subjects before and while in hypnosis. These studies show different areas of the brain are activated when an individual is hypnotized. The hypnotic state is actually a measurably different state of mind.


    Myth #3 - Hypnosis Only Works for Weak-Minded or Unintelligent People


    This is completely untrue. Everyone of normal IQ or higher is capable of being hypnotized, if they are willing to be. Actually, the more intelligent a person is, the greater their capacity to utilize hypnosis, because they are capable of greater concentration.


    Myth #4 - Hypnosis Can Make You Reveal Your Deepest Secrets


    This is another misconception. You will not reveal anything you do not want to, because you are actually in control while in hypnosis, just as you are in everyday life.


    Myth #5 - Hypnosis is Only Useful for Entertainment


    While the hypnosis done on stage and television shows can be entertaining, it also has a range of uses for helping people solve problems, change habits and improve lives. It is being successfully used to help with phobias, fears, anxiety, negative habits, stress management, pain control, and more.

    Myth #6 - Hypnosis is New Age

    Hypnosis has nothing to do with New Age practices, instead it is a set of skills and techniques developed and refined by practitioners in many countries over the last 150+ years.


    Myth #7 - A Person Can Get Stuck in Hypnosis

    It is impossible to be "stuck" in hypnosis. But what if you are in hypnosis and something happens to the hypnotist, how then can you get out of trance? If you were left in trance, you would emerge naturally from this state of mind when ready, feeling refreshed, just as a person who goes to sleep naturally awakens when they are ready.

    Myth #8 - Hypnosis is Unconsciousness or Sleep


    Hypnosis is not sleep or loss of consciousness. During hypnosis sessions, most people are aware of everything, though the mind may wander or drift at times. So while you are in hypnosis you should not expect to lose consciousness.

  5. The Conscious Mind versus The Creative Mind

    How does your conscious mind work in relation to your creative or subconscious mind? How can suggestions change your reality?


    Please watch this video before reading on. You may have already seen this, in which case, watch it anyway.









    So what just happened? Well the video asked you, actually it made a suggestion for you to count the number of passes the white team made. You focused all of your concentration on that task. At a conscious level you where only aware of the white team because that's all you needed to know to achieve your objective. Which was to count the number of passes made. Beyond your conscious awareness your creative or subconscious mind was gathering all the information available in the video, but since you didn't need this it was filed away for another day.


    The voice then suggested to you that there was a "moon walking" gorilla dancing across the screen. What did you see when the video was replayed? The "moon walking" gorilla. The video itself is a great demonstration in awareness and perception. At another level it demonstrates with just a few words, how your reality can be changed. How relevant is this to the hypnotic arts? I will leave that one with you for now to reflect!

  6. How to Increase Your Success With Rapid and Instant Inductions

    I have been working with some other hypnotists outside of the Columbus, Georgia area lately. I have been helping them out, teaching, whatever you may call it. One of the first things most people ask me about is the ever so popular Instant and Rapid Inductions.


    Instant and Rapid Inductions are a technique some hypnotists use to get a person in hypnosis within just a couple of seconds or a few minutes. Typically instant inductions take about 10 seconds or less and Rapid Inductions are 4 minutes or less. Anyone who has been to a decent stage show has more than likely seen these techniques used. They are real and no it isn't something the Hypnotists does to fool the crowd.


    Instant and Rapid Inductions are great for a number of reasons. One reason is they save tons of time. Progressive relaxations can take a while and hypnosis is not promised when you use this method. Thus the reason word relaxation is mentioned in the name. Still when I'm doing street hypnosis or working with a client I want to give them all the time possible for change. So quicker inductions work for me. In some cases I will use some type of relaxation induction when working with some clients who have some form of discomfort or clients who have some type of medical conditions, which keeps me from using a faster style induction.


    Now I got a little off track, but hey knowledge is knowledge correct? Now when hypnotists in training ask me about Instant and Rapid Inductions they always start asking me about the procedures. They want to know how fast to move their hand from the client's hand? What angle do I need to use when doing an arm pull? Do I need to stroke the back of their neck, head or whatever? They ask all these questions in attempt to learn the induction, but in reality they are just making it harder on themselves. Yes, technique does play a part in the induction process, but a very small part in my opinion. Instant and Rapid Inductions look hard, but in reality they are quite easy. They do look as if they would be complicated so I can understand someone asking a million questions.


    Do I recommend someone to watch a youtube video and go out and start doing these inductions? The answer to that question is a simple no. It is true that some people will be able to successful hypnotize someone if they mimic a video and watch it enough, but I promise you that your overall success rate will not be that high. You may see a hypnotist shake someone's hand and yell sleep and witness the person drop to the floor or slump into his or her seat, but there is so much more involved. Trust me, I'm a hypnotist, I know. I recommend a person have some type of hypnotic knowledge beforehand, at least some basic understanding of suggestion formation, safety and how to control the situation.

    Once again I went a little off track, but that's okay. So when people ask me all these technically questions I tell them the simple truth "The stuff you are asking me doesn't matter at all" Some may feel like their money has been wasted...until I tell them why the stuff they are asking about doesn't matter. I explain to them that in reality inductions don't even exist. I tell the people I'm working with I could show you hundreds of inductions. I could show you every little movement, but an induction is nothing more than a ritual. They are steps we go through to convince ourselves it's working and to convince the person we are hypnotizing. Technically anything can be an induction when the properly set up is in place.


    I could drop a pen to the floor and send 100 people in trance. I could walk up to someone and just move my hand down his eyes and get hypnosis. How you ask? How can anything become an induction? It's easy and here is what must be done. You must set up the induction. The induction is the easy part. The set up is where a little bit of work and knowledge comes into play. Now, I'm not saying everyone will go into hypnosis just by you saying sleep, but if you set up everything properly than you will find that you now have a freedom you never had before when working with these inductions. You will find that your success rate increases as well as your confidence. You will find it easier to perform re-inductions as well. The freedom to look at any induction and break it down, the ability to create your own inductions on the fly. A master of your own inductions. Now how cool is that to you?


    1. You must talk with the person beforehand. We call it a pre-talk. I covered this before on my blog, but you must talk with the person you are working with. It is important to talk to them about hypnosis, explain the truth behind it, help them to understand the process and remove any fears they may have. The truth is some people fear hypnosis more than death, seriously. Now in a office setting a pre-talk can last anywhere from 15 minutes to 30 minutes, but when you are doing street hypnosis you should try to keep it to about 1 minutes to 2 minutes. In the beginning if it takes you longer that's okay. As you get better you will be able to give a faster pre-talk. Hypnosis is just like anything else it requires practice.


    The main points you want to cover are some of the fears people have about hypnosis such as getting stuck in hypnosis, which isn't possible. Telling their deepest secrets, which also won't happen, doing something against their morals or ethics, which also won't happen. You just want to touch on these subjects and than make sure to ask if they have any questions. Make them feel comfortable about hypnosis. This will also help in building rapport, as they will look at you as the expert. It may be your first time, but be confidence and you will be fine.


    2. You must build expectation and set it up where the client is looking forward to entering hypnosis. Let them know that just entering hypnosis can have benefits such as relaxation, reduced stress and etc. Let them know it going to feel great. I mean whatever you want to say is fine, but you must build up expectation. This is a very important step and don't skip over it. In a way expectation makes it where the client is happy to do as you ask because they can't wait to see what hypnosis is all about.


    3. The next thing you need to do is obtain permission, consent or implied consent. It's very easy to do and a step many people forget. I like to simply ask the person if they would now like to be hypnotized and if they say, "yes" I than ask them to give themselves mental permission to enter hypnosis. Do you have to do it this way, no, but it works for me. I have found that telling the client to give "themselves" permission is much more powerful than me asking permission to hypnotize them. Once you get permission, you have just increased your success rate.


    4 & 5. The next two items actually are done throughout the whole process. The step above is actually the last step before performing your induction. These following steps are very important and for some reason two of the hardest steps. The first one is Confidence. You must have confidence in yourself and your ability as a hypnotist. I will tell you now, you may be able to hypnotize a couple of people without confidence, but you will have a poor success rate. The person you are hypnotizing will be able to tell in most cases if you are not confidence and would you let someone who didn't look comfortable or confidence in their abilities hypnotize you? I wouldn't that's for sure.


    Remember you are the Hypnotist. You are the one running the show. Most times a person will be primed for hypnosis just because you are "the hypnotist". They figure you are the expert and they are giving up some form of trust to you. So if you don't have confidence, imagine you are confidence or pretend what it would be like to be confidence. Imagine this person entering a deep level of trance and everything going well. The next step and final step is to take control.


    Now I'm not talking about being mean to the person or being aggressive. Taking control means you are in control of the situation. For instance, if you are on a slope or a hill you may want to control the situation and ask the person to move with you to a better location. Now if you are in an office just make sure the client is comfortable and safe. You can choose to be direct with the person or you can choose to be passive. How do you know which style to use? Time will tell and the more you practice will help as well. If one thing isn't working then switch it up. Either way decide a method you want to use and take control. Remember you are the hypnotist, not the other person. They need you to take control of the situation and make this happen for them.


    Now, if you follow these tips I promise you your success rate will jump through the roof. This is the method most of us use to get the results we get. You will also find that each person you successfully hypnotize will boost your confidence. In most cases it will become easier and easier to perform an induction with the person if they are pre-conditioned as well. Now will you still be able to hypnotize some people without following these steps, maybe, but you will not have a very high success rate. Now does following these steps mean you will be able to just say sleep, no. It may take some conditioning, but when doing these steps you are stacking the cards in your favor.


    So in reality you really don't need to know every movement of an induction down to the smallest details. Just set it up correctly and copy the induction to the best of your ability.     Many of the common misconceptions about hypnosis have originated in the minds of Hollywood writers. Hypnosis and NLP are typically portrayed in a fantastic and sensationalistic manner.


    The idea that you are under someone else's control is one of the most common misconceptions. Murder mystery writers love this one since it gives them a new angle for a story. This myth has been disproved over and over again but still persists.



    A second misconception is that the person in hypnosis is going to be talking. This is something that would typically only happen in regression hypnosis. I may ask someone for a signal such as nod of the head or movement of a finger, but in a typical hypnosis session I am the only one talking. This fact is a huge relief to most of my clients.



    Many of my clients expect that they will not be aware of where they are and they won't remember what is said in hypnosis. This is also not true. In hypnosis you are aware of what is happening around you and if you wanted to you could get up and walk out of the room. Hypnosis actually increases focus. You will simply feel relaxed and comfortable.



    Another common misconception is that hypnosis is somehow against religion. This could not be further from the truth. Why shouldn't we use our minds to the best of our abilities? This one is promoted by the fearful and ignorant.



    Finally, the misconception that if you can be hypnotized it means you are not as intelligent as those who cannot. Again a misconception. Anyone who wants to be hypnotized and has at least an average level of intelligence can be hypnotized. In my practice, I find those who are the most intelligent, educated and have the ability to focus are the easiest to hypnotize.



    The truth about hypnosis is that it is an altered state of mind which we all visit from time to time. It is simply a state of focused concentration most easily accessible when one is completely relaxed. The mind learns quickly in this focused state and that is why changes to feelings, behaviors and habits can take place in much less time when using hypnosis. When someone is in hypnosis they feel relaxed and comfortable. When they come back to their conscious mind after a session they typically feel relaxed and more positive and confident then they have in some time. After the session they may also notice changes in a habit, new positive healthy self talk or simply an overall feeling of well being depending on the focus of the session. They will also sleep better than they can remember sleeping in a long time.

  9. The Biggest Secret of Hypnosis

    There are many courses that you can learn the biggest secrets in hypnosis, of which there are many great ones. Here I will discuss what I believe to be a secret of hypnosis. Actually, it is completely my perspective and insight into hypnosis. To do this I will discuss with you a film that by it's very nature and target audience you will completely disbelieve my thinking, so please stay with me. One thing I will say, is that if you really get where I am coming from, then you will have a greater understanding of this ancient art.

    The film is Jack Black and Dreamworks' Kung Fu Panda (2008)! OK, disbelief is now setting in. Don't worry if you haven't seen the film. I will not reveal the ending, but will leave you to research that. I can't promise you intellectual stimulation or enjoyment. What I can say is that if you really get the ending then you will understand where I am coming from. Kung Fu Panda is about a talking animal who by will and accident becomes the chosen one to follow the ways of Kung Fu and have it's very secrets revealed to him.
    To cut a long story short. The talking bear has to prove himself to his piers and teacher. He faces the threats and challenge from his nemesis. Ultimately discovering Kung Fu's biggest secret. I apologise if this is an inaccurate description of the plot, but you get the general drift.

    So to find out what I believe to be an insight and possibly one of the secrets of hypnosis, you need to discover what is exactly revealed to Kung Fu Panda.
    Please don't misunderstand me by thinking I am being jovial about hypnosis. In fact, my seriousness is only out weighed by my passion for the subject . This is my genuine way to help people learn more about it.
