Memory and senses

When walking through a crowd of people a couple of days ago, I recognised a perfume that reminded me of a past relationship. I even got those butterfly sensations in my stomach. The aroma of fresh bread takes me back to eating my Grandma's home cooked food. Smells have a great significance in our past, bringing forward in our minds that real experience.
From Dowdey, Sarah, HowStuffWorks.com, 01 June 2009, "smells would not trigger memories if it weren't for conditioned responses. When you first smell a new scent, you link it to an event, a person, a thing or even a moment". Which is one reason why the smell of a perfume or the baking of bread can create a real emotional experience instantaneously in your mind.
Published in The New York Times, scientist believe there is a link not only between smell and memory, but taste and memory. The taste of Dip Dab sherbet reminds me of spending what seemed like hours trying to acquire as many sweets as possible with 10p as a kid. For anyone who doesn't know what Dip Dabs are. Basically, you get a bag full of sherbet with a lollipop. The aim was to suck the lollipop within an inch of its life until all the sherbet had been liberated from the bag. How the hours flew by!
