  1. Memory and senses

    Friday, 31 July 2009

When walking through a crowd of people a couple of days ago, I recognised a perfume that reminded me of a past relationship. I even got those butterfly sensations in my stomach. The aroma of fresh bread takes me back to eating my Grandma's home cooked food. Smells have a great significance in our past, bringing forward in our minds that real experience.

From Dowdey, Sarah, HowStuffWorks.com, 01 June 2009, "smells would not trigger memories if it weren't for conditioned responses. When you first smell a new scent, you link it to an event, a person, a thing or even a moment". Which is one reason why the smell of a perfume or the baking of bread can create a real emotional experience instantaneously in your mind.

Published in The New York Times, scientist believe there is a link not only between smell and memory, but taste and memory. The taste of Dip Dab sherbet reminds me of spending what seemed like hours trying to acquire as many sweets as possible with 10p as a kid. For anyone who doesn't know what Dip Dabs are. Basically, you get a bag full of sherbet with a lollipop. The aim was to suck the lollipop within an inch of its life until all the sherbet had been liberated from the bag. How the hours flew by!

  3. Hypnotherapy Directory: Finding a Professional Hypnotherapist

    Thursday, 9 July 2009
They say admitting you have a problem is often half the battle. And indeed it is. Deciding to do something about an issue that’s been rumbling on for months or years is the first positive step to tackling it. Whether it’s accepting that a phobia is controlling life, or admitting an addiction, recognising a need for help is a huge step.

Hypnotherapy can literally change and save lives. Those who use it to give up smoking are able to reduce the risk of developing smoking-related illnesses and improve their quality of life. People suffering from phobias, from spiders to social situations, are able to see and do things they never normally could.

The decision to undertake therapy is not one that anyone takes lightly. Many consider the idea for months or even years before deciding to take the plunge.

But once the initial decision has been made there are numerous issues to consider - practical and otherwise. What about, for example, location? Despite assured complete confidentiality people may prefer to see a hypnotherapist that is perhaps outside their local area, but still in surroundings they are comfortable in.

Money, of course, is a paramount issue. Hypnotherapists may offer reduced rates for students, and the unemployed or those seeking benefits, but which ones? No one wants to end up bartering with a hypnotherapist over the price of their mental well being.

And what guarantees that the hypnotherapist is the real deal? There are no laws in the UK that govern hypnotherapy, so what’s to stop anyone setting up shop to listen to people’s problems? There are qualifications and professional bodies, but these can often be confusing and over-whelming.

This is where Hypnotherapy Directory comes in. It was set up to provide a simple, easy, and most importantly un-daunting way of connecting people that need help with the people that provide it. A comprehensive searching tool, the site allows postcode, town and country searches of the whole of the UK, and produces a list of hypnotherapists registered in this area. Each hypnotherapist has a profile, listing a bit about themselves, their approaches, what areas they deal with, and all their training, qualification and experience and fees.

The site shows which hypnotherapists are registered/accredited with a professional body, and full profiles are only displayed after insurance and qualification documents are checked or membership with a professional body has been verified.

The site has also become a huge information bank - there are articles written by hypnotherapists, as well as comprehensive information on all kinds of distress - from depression to eating disorders to phobias, to help people identify their problems and become informed, not scared.

So don’t suffer in silence. Help is available, and most importantly it’s available in a simple, easy to find way. Visit http://www.hypnotherapy-directory.org.uk/
