True or false? 93% of all communication is non verbal

I was driving in my car on Sunday listening to BBC Radio 4 and a show called "More or Less", discussing this statement.
93% of all communication is non verbal
During the programme Tim Harford interviews DR Albert Mehrabian, a Californian Psychologist. He discusses how this statement is a misinterpretation of the results he obtained from research completed back in 1968. He also went on to discuss the elements of communication, i.e 7% are words, 38% is Tone and 55% being Body Language and how this was derived from his work.
Absolutely fascinating, click on this link and you can listen to the programme. The interview starts at around 23:11 mins.
